The reintroduction of the wolf to the United States was a major environmental story of the past 15 years. But now it is under threat – from its own success. The wolf has spread out from Yellowstone Park to occupy huge areas of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Now hunters in those states have managed to get a reintroduction of the wolf hunt.
This contravenes federal law – the wolf is a threatened species – but pleases the hardcore countryside lobby. In Wyoming they have declared the wolf vermin. Environmentalist groups are in uproar while Republicans are attempting to pass a bill that once again makes the wolf vermin and cuts conservation budgets by $65 billion. The stage is set for future wolf culls to be divisive and bloody affairs.
